Behaviour & Personal Conduct

Behaviour and personal conduct must at all times be of a high standard and designed to reflect the favourable and positive image of the Club and the sport. When attending meets/galas/opens under the control of the Chief Coach or Assistant Coach it is the responsibility of parent(s)/Guardian(s) to notify the Coach (es) if they are assuming responsibility between swimming sessions, otherwise swimmers will be expected to act as instructed by the Coach.

When Club swimmers conmpete in open competitions as individuals, that is, not through the Club, the safety of the swimmer is the responsibility of the accompanying Parent(s)/Guardian(s).

  • On arrival on poolside quickly find out where your team is sitting, (Team Post), and join the rest of the team
  • Await instructions about warming up
  • Do not leave the team post until you are called for your race
  • Ask the person in charge of the team post, (Whip), if you wish to leave the team post for any reason
  • Please remain quiet and still during the start of each race.(Once the race has started you can shout as loud as you like for your team)
  • After your race wait to be told to leave the water, then return immediately to the team post
  • ALWAYS WALK ALONG THE POOLSIDE
  • A swimmer who is rude or disobedient to Officials or parent helpers will be disciplined according to the club's discipline code
  • Remember you are an advert for the club and older swimmers are expected to set a good example to the younger ones.

Disciplinary Rules

Any group activity is dependent on the behaviour of individuals within that group to ensure the happy running of that group.

Discipline is an issue that should be clear to everyone. TO achieve this there is a strict code of conduct to which all swimmers are expected to adhere.

The rules are common-sense codes of behaviour adopted to enable the smooth running of the training session. For example, clearly for their protection, swimmers are not allowed to enter the water without a coach being present, nor run on poolside, also to keep quiet and pay attention whilst the coach is talking, to gain maximum benefit from the set.

As with any reputable and professionally organised body, there are formal procedures to protect the interests of all concerned

The disciplinary procedure within the club is operates as set out below. If a breach of the Code of Conduct occurs a verbal warning as set out in 1) below will be given. In the interests of the Club and the individual(s) concerned the verbal warning should be sufficient to prevent a reoccurence or a continuation of the breach. If a breach does re-occur or continue steps 2-5 will be used as necessary until the situation is resolved

  1. Verbal Warning
  2. Verbal Warning Recorded
  3. Written Warning
  4. Written Warning and Suspension
  5. Written Warning and Expulsion

At all stages of the procedure, the swimmer has the right to be represented by a person of his or her choice. The Committee must give notice that such action is to take place so that swimmer's representative can be present. Heated exchanges do not allow for a fair hearing, so all parties must conduct themselves in a calm manner<./p>

Other points worth noting:

  • Decisions go from season to season (September to September);
  • The club will notify both the parent (for children under the age of seventeen) and the swimmer, but for swimmers over seventeen, it is the responsibility of that swimmer to notify his/her parents of any impending disciplinary action.

In the past the above procedure has rarely been carried out in full, as we have found that differences can normally sorted out through discussion with affected parties. Should there be a need for the whole procedure to be followed, however, it is important that the proper channels are used. The complaint procedure is a two way process and a parent with a complaint or comment should record and direct any complaints to the committee through the squad representaives.

Please Note: This code of conduct applies to all members of the Club, including parents
