Newham Swimming Club General Training Information
Coaching
Coaching is organised on a squad basis, with membership of each squad determined by the swimmers level of performance and their personal objectives.
Training
Greenwich Leisure Ltd's Learn to Swim programme is the main source of new club members. Participants in the LTS Level four are given a free trial to ascertain if they are ready for / interested in the demands of club swimming.
Progression
Progression (Bronze, Silver, Gold) is achieved through a successful trial with the appropriate squad. Where a swimmer is not ready to step up a squad(s) he will be encouraged to work on a particular aspect of his/her swimming before undertaking another trial. Although this can be frustrating, it far preferable to being placed in an inappropriate squad where the swimmer will struggle and perhaps become disenchanted with swimming.
It is recognised that some swimmers do not see Club membership as a commitment to train more and more to achieve higher targets. The name squad provides the opportunity for regular training without an expectation of participation in competitive swimming.
Coaching and Training
The Club employs qualified coaches to ensure that members have the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential as swimmers. Giuseppe Caporaso is NSC's head coach, supported by Deupty Head Coach Currently Richard Gordon. Senior members have the opportunity to take swimming teachers / coaches courses and in addition to the regular coaching staff. These courses are run by the club from time to time; please speak to Giuseppe or Richard if interested.
Coach/pool/swimmer ratios
The Coach/Swimmer ratio is a maximum of 24 swimmers to one coach, and the maximum numbers of swimmers per session depends on the number of lanes used but breaks down as follows:
Newham Squad - max 6 per lane, maximum 36 per session
Intermediate Squad - max 8 per lane, maximum 36 per session
Development Squad - max 8 per lane, maximum 36 per session
